SNP LAUNCH SHETLAND BY-ELECTION CAMPAIGN.
SNP OFFER BRIGHT FUTURE FOR ISLANDS IN FACE OF TORY BREXIT CHAOS.
Voters in Shetland should use the upcoming by-election to send Boris Johnson a message to stop a “headfirst rush to disaster”.
Speaking at the launch of the party’s Shetland by-election campaign in Lerwick today, the First Minister said that SNP candidate Tom Wills will “work hard to win the trust of people across these islands and is determined to fight their corner at Holyrood.”
Born and raised in Shetland, Tom Wills has built a successful international career in offshore renewables – currently working for one of the world’s leading tidal energy companies, Nova Innovation.
Commenting, Nicola Sturgeon said:
“Boris Johnson has formed a government of hardliners, prepared to push Scotland and the UK off the cliff edge of a No Deal Brexit. Shetland didn’t vote for this. Nor did it vote for this Tory government or for Boris Johnson.
“By voting SNP on 29th August we can send Boris Johnson the message he needs to hear: stop this headfirst rush to disaster.
“Experience tells us the Lib Dems would rather cosy up to the Tories, than stand up to them. Jo Swinson has previously indicated her party – deeply stained by austerity and the betrayal over tuition fees – could go back into coalition with the Tories. By contrast, when the SNP wins elections Westminster sits up and takes notice.
“We’ve got an excellent candidate for Shetland in Tom Wills. He’ll work hard to win the trust of people across these islands and is determined to fight their corner at Holyrood.
“The SNP wants Shetland to have the choice of a better future, not the chaos and despair of Tory governments with no mandate who are prepared to damage our interests.”
SNP Candidate for Shetland, Tom Wills, added:
“In government, the SNP has been working hard to help shape a fairer, more prosperous Shetland where people want to live, work and raise a family.
“But I know there’s more work to do. And Shetland is ready for change – our islands need an MSP that is willing to work constructively to make that happen.
“These islands hold so much potential – I want to help Shetland become a global leader in offshore renewables. With the security and market access of EU membership, I know that we can kick start a green jobs boom which benefits everyone.
“I’m ready to stand up for Shetland and ensure local issues are heard right at the heart of Holyrood. The tide is turning – next month the people of Shetland will have the opportunity to choose a different path and secure a brighter future for these islands.”
