LAST PRIME MINISTER OF THE UK.

LAST PRIME MINISTER OF THE UK.

Boris Johnson will be the last Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, the SNP’s Westminster Leader has said today in the House of Commons.

In response to Mr Johnson’s first statement in Parliament, Ian Blackford MP said the Tory leader had no mandate in Scotland, and his devastating plans for Brexit were not supported in Scotland and would inflict lasting harm on the economy.

Ian Blackford said the SNP would work to stop Brexit and prevent a no-deal disaster – and called on Boris Johnson to call a General Election.

Earlier this month the OBR also revealed that a no-deal exit from the EU could lead to a plunge in the value of the pound, leave a £30bn black hole in the public finances and push Scotland and the UK into recession.

Commenting, Ian Blackford MP said:

“Boris Johnson has no mandate in Scotland. Scotland didn’t vote for Brexit, we didn’t vote for this Tory government, and we certainly didn’t vote for a devastating no-deal.

“Yet again, Scotland is being ignored and our interests are being side-lined. Any form of Brexit would be damaging but crashing out with no-deal would threaten to destroy 100,000 Scottish jobs and cost every person in the country £2,300 a year.

“If Boris Johnson continues down this disastrous road, then he will be the last Prime Minister of the UK. The people of Scotland will not put up with the damage imposed by Westminster.

“Westminster is becoming more extreme and out of touch with Scotland by the day. It’s no wonder that support for independence is growing and a majority now support a fresh referendum.

“The people of Scotland deserve the choice of a better future than the Brexit Britain being forced upon us by Westminster against our will. It’s clear that the only way to properly protect our interests is by becoming an equal and independent European country.”

TAXPAYERS CASH THROWN DOWN DRAIN IN TORY NO-DEAL AD CAMPAIGN.

TAXPAYERS CASH THROWN DOWN DRAIN IN TORY NO-DEAL AD CAMPAIGN.

SHAMEFUL WASTE OF MONEY ON BREXIT SCOTLAND DIDN’T VOTE FOR?

The SNP has criticised Tory government plans to waste £100million of public funds on advertising a No-Deal Brexit – describing it as a “shameful waste of taxpayers’ cash”.

The reports that the UK government will waste the money, came as Chief Secretary to the Treasury Rishi Sunak MP told Sky News “We are turbo charging preparations for no deal and that is now the Government’s number one priority.”

Commenting, SNP Treasury spokesperson Alison Thewliss MP said:

“This is a shameful waste of taxpayers’ cash, which would be much better spent undoing some of the damage done by a decade of Tory cuts to social security and public services.

“Boris Johnson has no mandate in Scotland. We didn’t vote for Brexit and we didn’t vote for this Tory government. With public money being thrown down the drain, the Tories must explain why Scottish taxpayers are being forced to foot the bill for a Brexit we do not want.

“Yet again, Scotland is being completely ignored by Westminster and our interests are being side-lined. With 100,000 Scottish jobs under threat from a Tory Brexit, it’s no wonder that support for independence is growing and a majority of people want a fresh referendum.

“People in Scotland deserve the choice of a better future than the Brexit Britain being imposed on us by Westminster. It’s clearer than ever that the only way to properly protect Scotland’s interests is by becoming an equal and independent European country.”

DAVIDSON MUST GUARANTEE TORY MPS WILL VOTE AGAINST NO-DEAL.

DAVIDSON MUST GUARANTEE TORY MPS WILL VOTE AGAINST NO-DEAL.

BLACKFORD, EMPTY RHETORIC AND ‘PR EXERCISES’ WON’T STOP BREXIT DISASTER.

The SNP has challenged Ruth Davidson to give a “cast-iron guarantee” that Scottish Tory MPs will vote to block a no-deal Brexit when the House of Commons returns from recess.

In a letter today, Ian Blackford MP said the Scottish Tory leader needed to show that her proclaimed opposition to Boris Johnson’s plans to drag Scotland out of the EU “do or die, come what may” by 31st October was not just “empty rhetoric” or a “cynical PR exercise” – designed to stop Tory support collapsing further in Scotland.

The SNP Westminster Leader pointed out that while SNP MPs had consistently voted to prevent a no-deal Brexit, Scottish Tory MPs had voted for it on every occasion – including at least sixteen times this year. The damaging Scottish Tory voting record contradicts reports Ruth Davidson expected them to vote as a bloc to protect Scotland’s interests.

Davidson has repeatedly flip-flopped on Brexit – accepting every decision by Downing Street. First she campaigned for Remain, calling Boris Johnson a liar. Then she was for Brexit but only with single market membership. Then she changed her position again, and was for it but only if there was no differentiation with Northern Ireland – threatening to resign over opposition to the backstop. Then she U-turned once more, and backed Theresa May’s deal despite the backstop. Now she has changed her mind yet again, and appears willing to allow a Boris Johnson Brexit.

Commenting, Ian Blackford MP said:

“Ruth Davidson must give a cast-iron guarantee that Scottish Tory MPs will vote to block a no-deal Brexit – or it will be clear her words are just empty rhetoric.

“Tory plans to drag Scotland out of the EU against our will, “come what may”, would be devastating for Scotland – threatening to cause a recession, destroy 100,000 Scottish jobs and cost every person in the country £2,300 a year.

“Ms Davidson once claimed Scottish Tory MPs would vote as a bloc to protect Scotland’s interests – but nothing could be further from the truth. Every time they have had the chance to prevent a no-deal disaster they have instead voted for it.

“Given all the flip-flops and u-turns Ruth Davidson has performed on Brexit, people are understandably sceptical that her opposition to a no-deal is just another cynical PR exercise – and she will continue to accept whatever form of Brexit is imposed on Scotland.

“The SNP will continue to do everything we can to stop Brexit and prevent a No-Deal disaster. With Scotland being completely ignored by Westminster, it is no wonder that support for independence is growing and a majority now want a fresh referendum.

“People in Scotland deserve the choice of a better future than the Brexit Britain being imposed on us. It’s clearer than ever that the only way to properly protect Scotland’s interests is by becoming an equal and independent European country.”

Letter from Ian Blackford MP to Ruth Davidson MSP (Tuesday 30th July 2019)

Dear Ruth,

I note the comments you made in your Mail on Sunday column on 28th July that you will now join the SNP in opposing Boris Johnson’s reckless plan to drag Scotland out of the EU “do or die, come what may” by 31st October this year.

As you know, Scotland voted overwhelmingly to remain in the EU by 62% – and polls show support for retaining our EU membership has increased even further since the referendum.

Any form of Brexit would be deeply damaging for Scotland but the Tory government’s threat to impose a No-Deal Brexit against our will would be utterly devastating – threatening to cause a recession, destroy 100,000 Scottish jobs, and cost every person in the country £2,300 a year.

The SNP has consistently opposed a no-deal Brexit at every opportunity since the referendum. The same cannot be said for Scottish Tory MPs – who have repeatedly voted to keep no-deal on the table – despite the catastrophic harm they know it would inflict on their own constituents.

You’ll be aware that some have suggested your opposition to a no-deal Brexit is little more than meaningless empty rhetoric. A cynical PR exercise designed to distance you from Boris Johnson, in the knowledge that the Tory party is tanking in the polls in Scotland and came fourth place in the European elections on just 11%.

Given the large number of flip-flops and u-turns you have performed on Brexit in recent years, people are understandably sceptical that your opposition to a No-Deal Brexit will also amount to nothing more than hollow words, and that in the end you’ll accept whatever form of Brexit is imposed on Scotland by Westminster.

I am therefore asking you to give a cast-iron guarantee that you will instruct all Scottish Tory MPs to vote against and block a no-deal Brexit at every opportunity that arises in the coming months, when the House of Commons returns from recess.

SNP MPs have been working with colleagues across the parties since 2016 to stop a no-deal Brexit, including Plaid Cymru, Green, Lib Dem, Change UK, Labour and rebel Tory MPs. I hope you’ll now join us, and prove that Scottish Tory MPs won’t continue to just rubber-stamp every damaging decision from Downing Street regardless of the cost to Scotland.

JOHNSON IN DENIAL ABOUT DEVASTATING BREXIT BLOW TO FARMERS.

JOHNSON IN DENIAL ABOUT DEVASTATING BREXIT BLOW TO FARMERS.

TORIES MUST SCRAP PLANS AND PAY UP MISSING £160 MILLION.

The SNP has said Boris Johnson is “in total denial” over the harm his extreme Brexit plans will inflict on farmers and Scotland’s food and drink industry.

As the Tory leader visits south Wales to meet farmers today, Deidre Brock MP said his extreme Brexit plans would leave many farmers and producers struggling to survive in the face of huge trade barriers, cuts to subsidies, and shortages of workers.

The SNP Food and Rural Affairs spokesperson also called on the UK government to finally pay up the missing £160million in convergence payments it owes Scotland’s farmers, and stop damaging Scotland’s food and drink industry with its hostile environment policies that have caused shortages of vital workers.

Commenting, SNP Food and Rural Affairs spokesperson Deidre Brock MP said:

“Boris Johnson is in total denial about the devastating impact that his extreme Brexit plans would have on farmers and producers across Scotland and the UK – leaving many struggling to survive.

“Any form of Brexit would be damaging – but a No-Deal exit would create huge barriers to trade, making produce uncompetitive, and leading to an appalling situation where millions of unsold lambs and other livestock may have to be slaughtered and burned.

“If the UK government wants to help our food and drink industry it must pay up the £160million is still owes Scotland’s farmers in missing convergence funds, and stop damaging our agricultural sector with its hostile environment policies that have caused shortages of workers, leaving quality Scottish fruit rotting in the fields.

“Scotland has been completely ignored by Westminster, and it’s clearer than ever that the only way to properly protect Scotland’s interests is by becoming an equal and independent European country.”

RUTH DAVIDSON’S NO DEAL POSITION UNTENABLE AND WEAK.

RUTH DAVIDSON’S NO DEAL POSITION UNTENABLE AND WEAK.

EMBARRASSMENT FOR DAVIDSON AS GOVE SHREDS HER AUTHORITY.

The SNP has challenged Ruth Davidson to find a backbone and oppose disastrous Tory plans for a no-deal Brexit – or face a backlash from Scottish voters who have consistently shown they want to Remain in the EU.

Ms Davidson wrote in a Sunday paper today that she will back Boris Johnson but will not give her support to a no-deal Brexit. Embarrassingly the article appeared just as Michael Gove wrote in another Sunday paper that the UK government is now “working on the assumption” of a no-deal Brexit.

Speaking ahead of Boris Johnson’s expected visit to Scotland, Stephen Gethins MP said that the Scottish Tory leader must set out exactly how she will meaningfully oppose Johnson’s no-deal Brexit plans – including by giving a cast iron commitment that all Scottish Tory MPs will vote against no-deal.

The SNP’s Foreign Affairs and Europe spokesperson also pointed out that every time Scottish Tory MPs have had the chance to vote against no-deal previously, they have instead voted for it – despite reports that Ruth Davidson expected them to vote as a bloc to protect Scotland’s interests.

Davidson has repeatedly flip-flopped on Brexit – accepting every decision by Downing Street. First she campaigned for Remain, calling Boris Johnson a liar. Then she was for Brexit but only with membership of the single market. Then she changed her position again, and was for it but only if there was no differentiation with Northern Ireland – threatening to resign over opposition to the backstop. Then she changed her position once more, and backed Theresa May’s deal despite the backstop. Now she has changed her mind yet again, and appears willing to allow a Boris Johnson Brexit.

At the European elections the Tories collapsed into fourth place in Scotland on 11%. A YouGov poll this week found the Tories have an even bigger Scotland problem under Boris Johnson. The new Tory leader is less popular in Scotland than elsewhere in the UK. Two-thirds of Scots (65%) said he would make a ‘poor’ or ‘terrible’ Prime Minister, 76% say he’s “out of touch”, 71% ‘untrustworthy’, 69% ‘incompetent’, 63% “don’t like him” and 71% think he is “Britain’s Trump”.

Commenting, Stephen Gethins MP said:

“It’s time for Ruth Davidson to find a backbone and join the SNP in meaningfully opposing Boris Johnson’s disastrous Brexit plans – instead of always rolling-over.

“She says she will support Mr Johnson but not a no-deal Brexit – but the fact is you can’t do both. Her position is untenable and weak.

“As the European elections showed, the Tories support for Brexit is damaging them in Scotland – and they will face an electoral backlash if they drag Scotland out of the EU against our will.

“Now is not the time for more of Ms Davidson’s flip-flopping or PR exercises. She must give a cast iron guarantee that all Scottish Tory MPs will vote against a catastrophic no-deal Brexit, which threatens to cause a recession, destroy 100,000 Scottish jobs, and cost every person in the country £2,300 a year.

“With three months to go until we are set to crash out of the EU, the SNP will do everything we can to stop Brexit, prevent a no-deal disaster, and stand up for Scotland. In contrast, the Scottish Tories have consistently voted for Brexit at every opportunity – including no-deal.

“Scotland is being completely ignored by Westminster and our interests are being sidelined. It’s no wonder that support for independence is growing, and polls show a majority of Scots support a fresh referendum.

“People in Scotland deserve the choice of a better future than the Brexit Britain being imposed on them. It’s clearer than ever that the only way to properly protect our interests is by becoming an equal and independent European country.”

NO-DEAL TORY CLAIMS £1.2 MILLION IN EU FUNDS.

NO-DEAL TORY CLAIMS £1.2 MILLION IN EU FUNDS.

The SNP has slammed new Scottish Secretary Alister Jack for claiming EU funding support while advocating a no-deal Brexit, which threatens 100,000 Scottish jobs.

Tommy Sheppard MP branded the Scottish Secretary “hypocritical” that he would claim the funds while supporting a devastating no-deal Brexit, claiming the MP has “never truly had the people of Scotland in mind”.

Alister Jack was announced as the new Secretary of State for Scotland earlier this week. His register of interests shows shareholdings in Courance Farms, which has received £1,194,118.22 in CAP funding since 2002.

Commenting, Scotland Office spokesperson Tommy Sheppard MP said:

“It’s safe to say the new Secretary of State has never truly had the people of Scotland in mind, and his hypocrisy in supporting a destructive no-deal Brexit while enjoying substantial EU support himself is staggering.

“It’s astounding that a serving MP has the brass neck to claim almost £1.2 million in CAP funds but at the same time argue to drag Scotland out of the EU, against its will and at the staggering cost to every person in Scotland of £2,300 per year.

“The new Secretary of State has only been in his post a few short days, yet his inability to put the interests of people in Scotland at the top of his agenda is staggering.

“Scotland did not vote for this chaos. With the Tory party lurching even further to the right, and a raft of political appointees at Westminster who clearly don’t care about Scotland, it’s clearer than ever that our future cannot be left in the hands of Boris Johnson and his Cabinet cronies – it’s time for people in Scotland to consider a brighter future as an independent European nation. ”

BORIS PLAYING CATCH UP WITH SNP RECORD ON POLICING.

BORIS PLAYING CATCH UP WITH SNP RECORD ON POLICING.

TORIES MUST “COUGH UP” OVERDUE FUNDING FOR SCOTLAND.

The SNP has said the Tory government must “cough up” hundreds of millions owed to Scotland for police funding.

Joanna Cherry QC MP said the UK government still owed the Scottish Government a refund of the £125million paid by Police Scotland in VAT between 2013 and 2018, and was yet to outline or hand-over a single penny of the funding Scotland is due to receive in Barnett consequentials from the UK government’s announcement on policing – estimated to be over £100million.

The SNP Justice and Home Affairs spokesperson said Boris Johnson was “playing catch up” with the SNP record on policing, and said the Tory government’s announcement that it will recruit 20,000 police officers for England and Wales was long-overdue and would only partially reverse the Tory cuts made to policing over the past decade.

Home Office figures show that forces in England and Wales lost 20,564 officers as a result of Tory government cuts between March 2010 and March 2019. In contrast, the SNP government has increased the number of police officers in Scotland by over 1000 despite Tory cuts. The total number of police officers in Scotland was 17,251 as of 31 March 2019 – an increase of 1,017 police officers (+6.3%) from the position inherited in 2007.

Under the SNP, Scotland has more police officers per head of population than England and Wales. In September 2018, there were around 32 officers per 10,000 population in Scotland, compared to around 21 officers per 10,000 population in England and Wales. None of the Conservatives, Labour or Lib Dems pledged to increase officer numbers at the last Scottish Parliament election in 2016.

While knife crime and others crimes have soared in England and Wales under the Tories, the recent Scottish Crime and Justice Survey shows that crime has fallen by more than two-fifths (42%) since 2008/09, under the SNP government.

Commenting, SNP Justice and Home Affairs spokesperson, Joanna Cherry QC MP said:

“It’s time for the UK government to finally cough up the hundreds of millions it owes Scotland in missing police funding – after a decade of Tory cuts.

“The UK government’s u-turn on police numbers in England and Wales is long-overdue. Even if it is fully implemented it will only partially reverse the cuts the Tories have already made, and it won’t undo the damage the Tories have done through years of starving the police of vital funding.

“Boris Johnson is playing catch up with the SNP’s record on policing. While the Tories have slashed police numbers by more than 20,000 in England and Wales, the SNP government has increased the number of police officers in Scotland significantly – ensuring more officers per head and delivering a 42% fall in recorded crime.

“The SNP’s commitment to Scottish policing is clear – the Tories must match it and start by repaying the £125million still owed to Police Scotland in overdue VAT refunds.”

RUTH DAVIDSON WEAKENED AS INFLUENCE EBBS AWAY.

RUTH DAVIDSON WEAKENED AS INFLUENCE EBBS AWAY.

WORCESTER MP APPOINTMENT SHOWS LACK OF TALENT IN SCOTTISH TORIES.

The SNP has said the appointment of Worcester MP Robin Walker to the Scotland Office is another snub to Ruth Davidson whose influence is rapidly ebbing away.

The move comes after David Mundell was sacked as Scottish Secretary and replaced with hardline Brexiteer Alister Jack, despite pleas from Ruth Davidson to keep Mundell in place.

Tommy Sheppard MP said Robin Walker’s appointment as a junior minister revealed the lack of talent among Scottish Tory MPs, who were not offered the role, and have said they are “stunned, baffled, incredulous” in response to the move.

The SNP Scotland Office spokesperson added Westminster was becoming more extreme and out of touch with Scotland by the day. As Boris Johnson’s government presses ahead with plans to impose a devastating Brexit against Scotland’s will.

Commenting, Tommy Sheppard MP said:

“This is another humiliating snub for Ruth Davidson, whose influence is rapidly ebbing away and who must be concerned a leadership challenge will be in sight.

“It is staggering that Boris Johnson thought a Brexiteer Tory MP for Worcester would be a better appointment to the Scotland Office than any of the Scottish Tories – revealing their lack of talent.

“Yet again, Scotland is being ignored by Westminster, and Robin Walker’s appointment demonstrates how little regard the Tory government has for Scotland’s views and interests.

“Westminster is becoming more extreme and out of touch with Scotland by the day – as the Tory government prepares to take us off the Brexit cliff edge against our will.

“Any pretence that Scotland will be treated as an equal partner in the UK has long been abandoned. It’s clearer than ever that the only way to properly protect our interests is by becoming an equal and independent European country.”

SNP LAUNCH SHETLAND BY-ELECTION CAMPAIGN.

SNP LAUNCH SHETLAND BY-ELECTION CAMPAIGN.

SNP OFFER BRIGHT FUTURE FOR ISLANDS IN FACE OF TORY BREXIT CHAOS.

Voters in Shetland should use the upcoming by-election to send Boris Johnson a message to stop a “headfirst rush to disaster”.

Speaking at the launch of the party’s Shetland by-election campaign in Lerwick today, the First Minister said that SNP candidate Tom Wills will “work hard to win the trust of people across these islands and is determined to fight their corner at Holyrood.”

Born and raised in Shetland, Tom Wills has built a successful international career in offshore renewables – currently working for one of the world’s leading tidal energy companies, Nova Innovation.

Commenting, Nicola Sturgeon said:

“Boris Johnson has formed a government of hardliners, prepared to push Scotland and the UK off the cliff edge of a No Deal Brexit. Shetland didn’t vote for this. Nor did it vote for this Tory government or for Boris Johnson.

“By voting SNP on 29th August we can send Boris Johnson the message he needs to hear: stop this headfirst rush to disaster.

“Experience tells us the Lib Dems would rather cosy up to the Tories, than stand up to them. Jo Swinson has previously indicated her party – deeply stained by austerity and the betrayal over tuition fees – could go back into coalition with the Tories. By contrast, when the SNP wins elections Westminster sits up and takes notice.

“We’ve got an excellent candidate for Shetland in Tom Wills. He’ll work hard to win the trust of people across these islands and is determined to fight their corner at Holyrood.

“The SNP wants Shetland to have the choice of a better future, not the chaos and despair of Tory governments with no mandate who are prepared to damage our interests.”

SNP Candidate for Shetland, Tom Wills, added:

“In government, the SNP has been working hard to help shape a fairer, more prosperous Shetland where people want to live, work and raise a family.

“But I know there’s more work to do. And Shetland is ready for change – our islands need an MSP that is willing to work constructively to make that happen.

“These islands hold so much potential – I want to help Shetland become a global leader in offshore renewables. With the security and market access of EU membership, I know that we can kick start a green jobs boom which benefits everyone.

“I’m ready to stand up for Shetland and ensure local issues are heard right at the heart of Holyrood. The tide is turning – next month the people of Shetland will have the opportunity to choose a different path and secure a brighter future for these islands.”

GENERAL ELECTION 2019 TO REJECT TORIES AND BREXIT.

GENERAL ELECTION 2019 TO REJECT TORIES AND BREXIT.

People in Scotland are – by some distance – the most negative about the prospect of Boris Johnson taking over as Tory leader and Britain’s next Prime Minister, according to a new YouGov survey.

Unsurprisingly, just 15% of Scots view his succession in a positive light with 60% “disappointed” or “dismayed” by the prospect.

Much more than other parts of the UK surveyed, Scotland backs an early General Election – reflecting the fact that Scotland did not vote for a No Deal Brexit or for Boris Johnson and should have the chance to reject both.

Commenting, SNP Depute Leader Keith Brown MSP said:

“Before he’s even got the keys to Number 10, it’s clear that Scotland is reacting badly to having Boris Johnson foisted upon us as Prime Minister.

“And little wonder – he’s pursuing an agenda which is against Scotland’s interests, which would drag us out of the EU against our will and cause serious damage to our economy.

“Boris Johnson would wilfully make each and every one of us £2,300 worse off overnight, and end our freedom to live, work, trade and travel across Europe.

“To add insult to injury, he’s set to be the next Prime Minister with the approval of just 0.14% of voters.

“At the very least, Scotland deserves – and clearly wants – the opportunity to reject both Boris Johnson and a No Deal Brexit.

“But moreover, we shouldn’t find ourselves subject to the damaging actions of Tory governments and the whim of Tory leaders we didn’t vote for.

“With the full powers of independence, we can put Scotland’s future in Scotland’s hands for good.”
